“Cocaine Bear,” the movie, is merely screenwriter Jimmy Warden's “twisted fantasy of what I wish actually happened after the bear did all that cocaine,” he told Variety magazine. The movie, though set in a small Georgia town, was shot in 2021 instead in Ireland, which like Georgia offers very generous film tax credits.

Cocaine Bear roared into theaters this past February — and the titular character even made an appearance at the Oscars in March — and now,the outlandish action comedy is ready to take over home theaters. The adventure film about a bear on a drug-fueled rampage is available to stream for free on Amazon Prime Video.

An oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converge on a Georgia forest where a huge black bear goes on a murderous rampage after unintentionally ingesting cocaine.

In December 1985, a hunter found a dead bear next to an empty duffel bag in the north Georgia mountains. Authorities surmised that the bear died after consuming cocaine tied to Kentucky drug smuggler Drew Thornton, who inexplicably dumped duffel bags of cocaine out of an airplane.

Curious about "Cocaine bear?" It could of either been brilliant or terrible, and it is. Those hoping for an over the top, hilarious horror movie that doesn't take itself seriously (like us) will be beyond disappointed. Its like they had a good idea here, and went out of their way to avoid doing it.

It was late fall in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest in Georgia near the state's border with Tennessee when the hapless bear stumbled across three duffel bags full of cocaine jettisoned from an overloaded plane by drug smuggler and former Kentucky narcotics officer Andrew Carter Thornton II.

It's very mature: Expect strong drug content, incessant swearing ("f--k," "s--t," "ass," "motherf----r," and much more), and relentlessly gory violence. The bear mauls and dismembers people, and there are explicit images of several severed limbs, as well as a decapitated head.

But it is an incredible blast, especially if you have the benefit of seeing director Elizabeth Banks' insanely violent comedy/thriller with a packed crowd. The communal experience is essential here. “Cocaine Bear” will bring people together.
